Denmark super middleweight Oliver Zaren won a vacant minor title with a unanimous decision win over Croatia’s battle-tested Ante Bilic in a pro-am at Herlev Hall on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Four fights were featured in the professional boxing segment of the show, which was put on by Herlev BK and Primetime Promotions and drew a full house of about 2,000 spectators.
“The Great Dane” Zaren, 18-0 (7 KOs), outpointed the 41-year old Bilic, 31-3 (17 KOs) by scores of 100-89, 98-91 and 99-90 in a one-sided fight. Zaren, cornered by former super middleweight titleholder Mikkel Kessler, outboxed his opponent, switching from orthodox to southpaw and back.
Bilic’s face was badly marked up and bled from the nose, but he was never hurt and kept coming. In the last 30 seconds of the 10th and final round, Zaren opened up – and it backfired, as the still-strong Bilic fought back and earned the better of the exchanges. Bilic had a point deducted for a low blow in the eighth.
Lightweight and local hero Elias Idrissi, 9-1 (5 KOs), was knocked out by Italy’s Pasquale Barile, 11-4 (3 KOs), in a big upset – at least on paper.
After a quiet first round, Barile went to work with short bullrushes topped by a dangerous hook from either hand. Idrissi, who boxes with an upright style, was caught a few times and then knocked down by a right-left hook combination. He got up and was wrongly allowed to continue, and Barile followed up with a short right hook to send Idrissi down and out. No count was needed. Time of the knockout was 2 minutes and 38 seconds of the second round.
Netherlands cruiserweight Jakub Zalewski, 3-1, (2 KOs) knocked out Denmark’s Steffen Rorstrom, 5-1 (2 KOs), at 2 minutes and 59 seconds of the second round. Rorstrom showed poor punch resistance and was down once in the first and twice in the second – the last of which was 10-and-out.
Denmark heavyweight Gustav Thorsen, 7-0 (5 KOs), stopped 44-year old German veteran Muhammed Ali Durmaz, 35-37 (32 KOs), in the fourth round. Thorsen was too eager to impress, and Durmaz took him to school. But Durmaz tired, went down twice and saw the fight stopped at 2 minutes and 42 seconds.
