For most of last week, former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. was releasing a variety of videos where he was verbally blasting UFC champion Conor McGregor. The two fighters have been trading words in the press since the start of the year.

The recent run of attacks was surprising to many, because Mayweather - just a few short weeks ago - complained that McGregor was using his name and he warned him - and others - to stop piggybacking on his legacy. Mayweather retired from the sport of boxing in September 2015.

Mayweather even contacted UFC fighter Nate Diaz via video chat - and promised to finish off McGregor.

In what was considered to be a big upset, Diaz made McGregor tap out in their initial meeting earlier this year. McGregor got revenge in their rematch, going through a vicious war to win a close decision on the cards.

Mayweather offered fans a $10,000 prize for the best caption of McGregor tapping out to Diaz.

A few weeks ago, McGregor obtained a boxing license to compete in the state of California, which Mayweather’s camp labelled a “con job,” and an attempt to increase his fanbase. McGregor failed in his attempt to obtain a boxing license in Nevada - which would have allowed him to box in Las Vegas.

But Mayweather claims that he plans to smack McGregor when they see each other.

“I don’t give a f*** what night it was, I ain’t never taking no L. I’m f***ing McGregor up too. Punk-a** McGregor… I’m gonna slap McGregor. I’m gonna slap the s**t out of McGregor when I see him,” Mayweather said.

Speaking with RTE, McGregor was asked for his reaction to the recent run of taunts from Mayweather.

“I’ve got the boxing licence. His last pay-per-view was 350,000 buys. The fight was a flop, it was a dud. His last two fights have been duds. I certainly don’t need him. I could pick some local schmuk and still do huge numbers. Of course the Floyd fight is the fight the public want to see, but we’ll see. These things take time,” McGregor said.
