Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be going solo for his future fights. On Wednesday, Mayweather Promotions was granted a Nevada promoter's license by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The vote was unanimous. Since 2007, Golden Boy Promotions has co-promoted all Mayweather's fights - and they will also work side by side for the September 13th rematch with Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand.
After Mayweather's close friend, Richard Schaefer, left his CEO post at Golden Boy, most wondered if Mayweather would stop working with them. While Mayweather initially said he would break away, he decided to work with Golden Boy for the September date. Most believed Mayweather made that decision because Golden Boy had reserved the MGM for the September date and also because he needed their promotional license.
Mayweather's company has also obtained licenses to promote in New York and Washington. The undefeated boxer has three fights remaining in his lucrative Showtime contract. Once it expires in 2015, he vowed to continue in the sport as a promoter by staging events all over the country.
Mayweather's close friend and associate, Leonard Ellerbe, is the CEO of the company and handles the day to day business of getting fights for their roster of boxers.
