At the moment, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs) is a retired fighter. On Saturday night, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather had what he claims to be the final fight of his career. He won a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over Andre Berto before an announced crowd of 13,395.
Very few believe Mayweather will remain retired. Even some of the closest members of his inner circle are expecting him to fight again within a year.
On name that continuously gets brought up as a potential future opponent is WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs).
Golovkin is willing to drop down to 154-pounds to meet Mayweather halfway. Mayweather, while holder of the WBC/WBA world titles at 147, is also the WBA/WBC champion at 154.
Father and trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. would not advise him to take that fight. He strongly feels Golovkin is "too big" of an opponent, and claims the undefeated puncher will come in at 154 and rehydrate by "20-pounds" to gain a significant size advantage.
"A lot of people want him to fight Triple G. He ain't fighting no Triple G. Triple G is too damn big for him. [Golovkin] can't whoop him. As far as the style wise, he probably can't beat [my son] because he won't be able to lay a hand on [my son]," Floyd Sr. said.
