Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. wants his son, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs), to focus more on defense. The father-son team are training for the May 4th mandatory fight with Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs) on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In his recent fights, Mayweather Sr. felt his son was getting hit too much. He wants Floyd to go back to basics - to hit and not get hit.
"My thing is defense, and as you've seen in the two other fights that he's had lately, he's been hit more than he's used to getting hit. We're going to stop all that. You don't get hit, that's the name of the game - hit and don't get it. I'm going to hit you, but you're not going to hit me. The hit and miss game, we're going to do a lot more of that," Mayweather Sr. said.
Floyd Jr. disagrees that he's getting hit too much in his fights. He feels the only fight where he took some punches was during last May's victory over Miguel Cotto, which took place at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds.
"I only got hit in my last fight against Cotto. I got hit a few times. When I fought Mosley it was some years ago. Mosley hit me twice and I hit him like what...200 to 300 times," Mayweather Jr. said.
