Floyd Mayweather Sr., father and trainer of WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., is surprised with the tremendous amount of criticism directed at his son for selected Andre Berto as the opponent for September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Berto, a former WBC/IBF welterweight champion, is listed by every oddsmaker as a massive underdog and given virtually no shot at victory by nearly every expert.
Mayweather Jr. says he selected Berto because of his exciting fighting style. The upcoming defense is being marketed as the final fight of Mayweather's career and he wants to close things out with some fireworks in the ring.
"They all talkin like he's fighting a bum. Berto is no bum. He's a two-time world champion," Mayweather Sr. said.
At this point, most Mayweather fights are already sold out, but tickets are still available for the fight with Berto. That may be an indication that a shortcoming may be in store for the Showtime Pay-Per-View buy figures.
Mayweather Sr. predicts that most of the people who are attacking the show are still going to purchase the pay-per-view. The motivation? He says everyone will tune in to see if Berto can do the unthinkable and pull off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
"[The haters] are going to watch it. Do you know why? I'll tell you why. Because they all want [my son] to lose," Mayweather Sr. said.
