According to Gareth Williams, attorney for Ricky Hatton, the Manchester fighter has been approached for a 2009 rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. A little over a year ago, Hatton suffered his sole defeat to Mayweather in Las Vegas. After suffering the knockout loss, Hatton has chased after Mayweather for a rematch. Mayweather has not fought since the win over Hatton, announcing his retirement from the sport a few months ago.
The news comes out of left field after promoter Bob Arum told several Filipino reporters that Manny Pacquiao would be facing Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas. Williams claims that negotiations for a Pacquiao fight have not begun, contradicting what Arum stated, and that Mayweather Jr. is a viable option for Ricky. Some have already said that Hatton's camp could be dangling Mayweather's name to get more money out of the Pacquiao fight.
"Every light-welterweight in the world wants to fight Hatton. We've had approaches from everybody. We've also had approaches from people at 130-pounds, Juan (Manuel) Marquez and Juan Diaz both want to fight him. He is a massive draw and can fight where he wants. We've also had approaches from Mayweather to have a rematch with him. He wants to fight Ricky," Williams told PA Sport.
"But the fight we want to make, our preference, is Manny Pacquiao because we think that is a great fight. Ricky has made no secret of the fact he wants to take on the best and Pacquiao is regarded as the best. We're more than happy to make that fight but it has got to be on acceptable terms."
