London, UK - Former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) is not backing away from his desire to fight UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
Mayweather spoke to BoxingScene.com in an exclusive interview, detailing that he unretired for the sole purpose of facing McGregor in a boxing match. Mayweather retired from boxing in September 2015 after winning a twelve round decision over Andre Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“There’s only one fight that makes business sense. I came out of retirement because I’m a businessman and I want to give the world what they want to see. McGregor’s a fighter. I’m a fighter. This is what the fight fans and MMA fans want to see," Mayweather told BoxingScene.com.
Last week, UFC President Dana White indicated that a deal was in place between his company and McGregor - and because of that White would move forward by sitting down with Mayweather's handlers to work out the financial terms on that end.
Based on Mayweather's comments, White has not reached out - as of yet - to discuss those terms.
“I’m not here to throw anybody under the bus [and] I can’t sit here and say that they are waiting on us. I’m not saying that. And we’re not waiting on them. I have a team for [negotiating] but as soon as their side communicates with our side, then the fight will happen," Mayweather said.
Mayweather explained that he's not interested in facing any other name, in boxing or MMA, other than McGregor.
The former pound-for-pound king is currently in the UK, in support of his world champion, IBF super featherweight king Gervonta Davis, who makes a mandatory defense this coming Saturday night against undefeated Liam Walsh. The fight will be carried by Showtime in the United States and BoxNation in the UK. Mayweather's company, Mayweather Promotions, is promoting the event with Frank Warren.
