Judging by the time it took for light heavyweight prospect Marcus Browne to overwhelm Paul Vasquez, the 2012 Olympian didn’t have much of a challenge in front of him on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
“We knew he wasn’t supposed to be in there with us, so we went in there and took him out, did what we had to do, took care of the job, and on to the next one,” Browne said after the technical knockout win, which came just 28 seconds into the opening round.
Browne, a 23-year-old from the New York City borough of Staten Island, moved to 12-0 with 9 KOs. Vasquez, 36, of Martinez, California, fell to 10-6-1 with 3 KOs.
Marcus Browne, who fought for the United States in the 2012 Olympics, came in at 176.4 pounds. His opponent, Paul Vazquez, came in at 174.2.
Browne, 23, of the New York City borough of Staten Island, is 11-0 with 8 KOs. He hopes to be back in November.
Vazquez, 36, of Martinez, California, is 10-5-1 with 3 KOs. He had turned pro in 2004, fought until 2008, spent three years out of the ring before returning for a bout in 2011, then spent another two years away before coming back in 2013. Since 2013, he has lost four of his five bouts, including two straight by first-round stoppage.
“That’s the guy they got us, and we had to do what we had to do,” Browne said. “It’s frustrating, but … this is boxing, and it is what it is.”
He isn’t pressuring his team to step up the level of competition, though.
“I’m not telling my matchmaker and adviser anything. I’m pleased with how Al Haymon’s moving me, and that’s that,” he said.
