
The old guard of boxing networks is gone; the old guard of promoters is next
HBO, Showtime and ESPN no longer feature boxing, and promoters like Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank and Premier Boxing Champions are struggling, says Eric Raskin.

A handful of boxers affiliated with Premier Boxing Champions will be appearing on this Saturday’s pay-per-view card from Los Angeles, which is bankrolled by Riyadh Season, the Saudi Arabian entity whose entry into boxing is changing the sport.

Entering his prime at 27 and with a plethora of potential big fights likely in his future, there will be no shortage of promotional companies and platforms eager to join forces with Shakur Stevenson. The question is: who has the best shot at securing his services?

Henry Garcia hasn’t been pleased with the conduct of Oscar De La Hoya. The father of junior welterweight contender Ryan Garcia took aim at the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, which has been embroiled in a legal dispute with their star client for the past year.

Canelo Alvarez has controlled his own career ever since severing ties with Golden Boy Promotions in 2020. Six out of Alvarez’s last seven fights were promoted by Matchroom Boxing, with the other presented by Premier Boxing Champions in 2021 when Alvarez knocked out Caleb Plant to become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world.
