Luis DeCubas Jr., manager for WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs), spoke with BoxingScene.com with respect to his boxer's contractual status with Golden Boy Promotions. Lara is also advised by the influential Al Haymon.
In an earlier article on BoxingScene, Lara made it clear that he wasn't under a promotional contract with Golden Boy and voiced his displeasure with the way he was treated by their company. There has been a lot of controversy lately regarding numerous fighters, who are advised by Haymon, being showcased on Golden Boy events but have no promotional contract with Golden Boy.
On July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Lara will face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs) in the main event of a Showtime Pay-Per-View card.
"Canelo is Golden Boy's boxer, that's why I'm going after him. I used to be a part of Golden Boy but now I have nothing to do with them. They gave him the best fights and me being a better boxer than him, they ignored me. They threw me to the wolves so they could take my head off. Thankfully I came out on top, always proving myself and proving myself until now and we are here facing Canelo," Lara stated.
DeCubas told BoxingScene that Lara is working with Golden Boy for this fight and could very well work with them for all of his future fights. He says his boxer is simply upset because he believes Golden Boy has displayed favoritism towards Canelo.
"Lara is working with Golden Boy for this fight and possibly all of his future fights as well. They are one of the top promoters in boxing and a pleasure to work with through the years. Lara just has a chip on his shoulder and hasn't been too happy with the favoritism towards Canelo but that's life and on July 12th he can change his destiny forever and that's what he plans on doing," DeCubas told BoxingScene.com.
"Our main focus is on Canelo and that's all. All we asked for was fair judging and with the selections of Roth and Morreti, who are Hall of fame judges, we are very happy and Levi Martinez's reputation speaks for itself - he is one of the best. I really believe that Lara will be awarded the decision [if it goes the distance]."
