The questions about a Sergey Kovalev-Gennady Golovkin bout immediately after Kovalev topped Bernard Hopkins were one thing. But when more questions came days later, Kovalev’s manager shot down as absurd the idea of such a fight right now.
“Golovkin, you’re talking about one guy is at 160 and the other is at 175?” said Egis Klimas on a conference call not too long after Kovalev had again reiterated that he is not comfortable making a lighter weight than light heavyweight. “Let’s talk about the crazy stuff. Why should we go for Golovkin? Let’s aim for Mayweather for more money or let’s aim for Manny Pacquiao and more money there.”
Klimas was speaking in jest, of course.
“It’s crazy,” he said. “I cannot see. It’s two different weight classes. I don’t see that fight happening at any point. I really do not.”
Kathy Duva of Main Events, which promotes Kovalev, said that she learned long ago never to say never.
“It’s certainly not going to happen now,” she said. “It’s the kind of fight that if it did happen, it would be years from now, when Golovkin has moved up and felt comfortable at the weight. But then it’s so far off that it’s not really worth talking about.”
