There are some who believe that Andre Ward (31-0, 15KOs) - who won a rather unpopular decision against Sergey Kovalev (30-1, 15KOs) this past weekend in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena - had figured out 'the Krusher' in the second half of this contest.
This talk makes John David Jackson, who trains the Russian (who suffered his first official defeat on Saturday) chuckle a bit.
"Yes, it does [make me chuckle]," he told BoxingScene.com on Tuesday afternoon.
"It was more so that Sergey while he was in good shape he kind of took his foot off the gas pedal in the second half of the fight and that allowed Ward to come on a little bit. Still, Ward didn't hurt him. Ward got knocked down and survived and he came on a little bit and won a few rounds but he didn't win the fight."
After building an early lead - keyed by a second half knockdown of Ward - Kovalev had problems winning rounds on the scorecards of Glenn Trowbridge, Burt Clements and John McKaie and lost by the scores of 114-113 on all three cards.
Jackson says that he already has some adjustments in mind for the rematch - "Oh, most definitely. There's a lot of room for improvements in the second fight and we're definitely going to work on them."
