Andre Ward did the majority of his work at super middleweight, rounded off his career at light heavyweight in 2017 and has not boxed since.

Now, eight years on, the 32-0 (16 KOs) Ward admits he is tempted by one name.

Joshua, who has not fought since a September loss to Daniel Dubois, is presently being linked to fights against Jake Paul and Frenchman Tony Yoka.

There was a period in his career when Ward was lining up a fight with Joshua, preparing to use then WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew as a springboard into a fight with the then-unified heavyweight champion.

While that path closed on Ward, and he ended his career with two victories over Sergey Kovalev, the California star and former Olympic champion, Ward said: “I get asked on a day-to-day basis, do you miss boxing, and if you came back who would you fight? Most days I don’t miss it. I’m very content doing what I’m doing with life right now. Who would you fight? That’s the problem. There’s a lot of names out there but there’s not a lot of names that make sense. But it’s one name that I brought up before that when you say that name, I could see myself fighting him. Present day, today. If the business was right and everything was right on that front, me and Anthony Joshua. That’s a fight that I would take at Wembley Stadium. It’s a dangerous fight for my legacy, it’s a dangerous fight across the board, but that’s a fight that would get me in the gym and get me in the mindset that I need to get in to go to war. It’s Anthony Joshua. And I know he’s getting ready to fight Jake Paul, but I’m talking about a real fight, for legacy.”

Joshua replied – multiple times to the thread on Ward’s Instagram – addding: “Bro said Wembley stadium like it ‘s casual looooool 90k tickets DRE! What do your gate numbers look like DRE.”
