Centro de Convenciones Tlanepantla, Mexico - Former triple world champion Jhonny Gonzalez (60-10, 50 KOs) stopped Justin Savi (28-5-2, 18 KOs) in two rounds to retain the WBC International silver super featherweight title. Gonzalez dropped Savi in rounds one and two.
In the co-featured attraction, former IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina (25-6-2, 8 KOs) won an eight round unanimous decision over Reyes Sanchez (26-8-2, 15 KOs). The scores were 80-72, 79-73, 78-74.
Molina has now dropped down in weight and is competing as a welterweight. He wants to get a world title at 147 before the end of the year.
For Gonzalez, it was his first time in the ring since last December, when he beat Japanese fighter Hurricane Futa on points in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Gonzalez is still looking to get his career in order after a lackluster 2015.
The Mexican veteran was knocked out in four rounds, losing his WBC featherweight championship to Gary Russell Jr. in March. He moved up to super featherweight and stopped Kazuki Hasimoto of Japan in two rounds.
Gonzalez then returned on September 12th, as part of the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard and lost a twelve round majority decision to Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico. Then came the fight against Futa, which Gonzalez won with a twelve round unanimous decision.
Savi was in action last month and went to a six round draw with Fatiou Fassinou. Prior to that, last December, he lost an eight round decision to unbeaten countryman Rafael Mensah.
Gonzalez wants to get a world title fight by the end of the year. In the last few months his name has been mentioned by several top fighters as a potential future opponent.
