From the moment both Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis placed their names on the dotted line, Jermall Charlo knew that he had to be front row and center to witness their encounter.
Charlo, amongst numerous stars, filled the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, this past Saturday night as Davis and Garcia swapped fists in the center of the ring. Though there were times when Garcia experienced success, Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) mostly dominated throughout, leading to a stoppage victory in the seventh round.
Unlike many, Charlo was wholeheartedly expecting Garcia to figure out the perplexing rubik's cube that Davis presented to him. Ultimately, with the Houstonian sitting ringside, he admits that he was genuinely impressed by what he saw. However, despite nodding his head in approval, Charlo doesn't believe that the heavy-handed secondary titlist will land his money punch against the lightweight division’s reigning kingpin.
“After what I saw, I don’t think he can touch (Devin) Haney,” said Charlo to FightHype.com immediately after Davis scored the victory.
Haney, of course, currently holds the WBA, IBF, WBO, and WBC 135-pound titles. In just a few short weeks, the Las Vegas native will place his undisputed throne on the line when he takes on Vasiliy Lomachenko.
But while Haney (29-0, 15 KOs) has earned the right to be regarded as the division’s leading man, Shakur Stevenson has defiantly raised his hand. Earlier this month, the former Olympic silver medalist officially made his lightweight debut, making it look incredibly easy against Shuichiro Yoshino.
Now, the extremely confident 25-year-old is hoping that he’ll line up against the winner of Haney vs. Lomachenko in the immediate aftermath. As Stevenson (20-0, 10 KOs) now plays the waiting game, Charlo is standing firmly in his corner. Regardless of who the former unified super featherweight champion eventually faces, the 32-year-old middleweight champion is willing to plunk down his hard-earned money on the slick-hitting star out of Newark, New Jersey.
“Shakur is gonna beat all of them. I promise.”
