Trainer Jeff Mayweather is siding with multi-division champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (32-2-1, 18KOs) to defeat WBA 'regular' welterweight champion Keith "One time" Thurman (24-0, 21KOs). On March 7th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Thurman and Guerrero will collide in an NBC televised fight as part of Al Haymon's new 'Premier Boxing Champions' series.
Jeff is not impressed with Thurman's level of competition in the last few years. Thurman's team members have tried to get him fights with several of the tops names and they were unsuccessful. One of the fighters they tried to get was Guerrero, who in the past was not interested in the contest.
Guerrero's level of competition, with several title wins and a 2013 twelve round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr., has influenced Jeff's position on the fight.
"That’s a good fight. To be honest, I lean towards Guerrero. To this point, Thurman is a good fighter and he’s getting better, but at the same time, he still hasn’t fought anybody. I don’t like to say that because I don’t like to say that about fighters but what I’m saying is, the level fighters that he’s fought, if he’s as good as he’s supposed to be, he’s doing exactly what he’s supposed to do, because he hasn’t fought nobody," Jeff told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
