Former two division champion David Haye believes Amir Khan will solidify his position as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world by overcoming Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
On May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Khan (31-3, 19KOs) will move up by eight pounds to face Canelo (46-1-1, 32KOs) for the WBC middleweight title.
Khan is a huge underdog, with most pointing to his questionable chin and Canelo's advantages in size and power. Khan has been knocked out at lightweight and junior welterweight.
Canelo has one defeat on his ledger, a twelve round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. Khan believes that he can replicate Mayweather's strategy and pull off the big upset.
According to Haye, Canelo is the best victory on Mayweather's 49-0 record.
"Floyd Mayweather's best win on paper is Canelo Alvarez. That's his best win after 49 fights. What happens when Amir Khan beats the same guy? OK, then he's equal [in elite standing with Mayweather]. It doesn't undo the losses he's had, but it puts him into a category into the super elite. That would put him, I believe, number one pound-for-pound...for sure," Haye told BoxingScene.com's Declan Taylor.
Haye is very confident that Khan will shock the world. He doesn't want to hear any excuses afterwards.
"People need to give Khan the credit and realize what he's going to do. What I don't want to hear is after the fight........blah blah blah. ....diminishing his achievements. I want people to recognize now and say now - 'if he does it, how great it would be.'
"I don't want to hear - 'oh, blah blah blah, it was a catch-weight' [or something else]. I don't want to hear that. People need to acknowledge now and stick with that after the fight."
