Abel Sanchez, trainer of superstar fighter Gennady Golovkin, feels that while Martin Murray is a worthy challenger for Triple G, he will suffer the same fate as every other boxer who has faced his fighter when they meet on February 21st in Monte Carlo.
"Martin is an accomplished fighter. He had a draw with (Felix) Sturm in Germany which I think he won and he beat (Sergio) Martinez in Argentina but was robbed. I expect Murray will be in shape and ready for the challenge but Golovkin is on a different planet right now. Golovkin is a special kind of fighter that comes along every 20 years. I expect Murray to try to fight him but once Golovkin zeroes in on him then it's not going to be a long fight," Sanchez stated.
While Golovkin is still searching for a marquee win, he has made up for quality with quantity as he has fought seven times over the past two years. WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev also had difficulty securing a big fight until he defeated Bernard Hopkins on November 8th. Sanchez feels that Kovalev is a great fighter but that he isn't on the same level as Golovkin and that it is even harder for his fighter to land a mega fight.
"First of all Kovalev fought a great fight the other night. Kovalev used to be one of my fighters for 8 fights and he had 8 knockouts. Unfortunately for Hopkins he fought a kid who was young, hungry, and very skilled. He's a strong puncher but Kovalev is not on the same level as Golovkin so it was easier for them to accept that kind of fight.
"Unfortunately for Golovkin he looks more accomplished and more deadly in the ring so it's going to be difficult for us to get that signature fight so we just have to stay busy and that fight will come," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
