Robert Garcia, trainer/older brother of WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26Kos), is confident his boxer has what it takes to not only defeat Olympic gold medal winner Yuriorkis Gamboa (22-0, 16KOs) - but to secure that victory in style. Following Saturday's win over Orlando Salido, Mikey challenged Gamboa to a showdown - and Mikey is willing to meet the Cuban boxer at the super featherweight limit of 130-pounds.
Mikey beat Salido in far more dominating manner than Gamboa, who came off the mat to drop Salido twice to earn a twelve round decision a few years ago. Mikey dropped Salido four times before the match was stopped in the eight round due to and injury, and Garcia won a technical decision.
"Gamboa is a tremendous fighter. He has tremendous speed and tremendous power, but he's also beatable. I think Mikey's speed, skill, power - could be enough to dominate someone like Gamboa and it would be huge. Gamboa fought at 130 for his last fight, so [Mikey] could meet at 128 or even 130 and we'll be more than happy to take it," garcia told BoxingScene.com.
