In a recent interview, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum revealed three potential locations to host the heavyweight trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the third meeting has been pushed back until the end of the year.
Arum, who co-promotes Fury, named Macao, Las Vegas and Australia as three possible locations to host the fight.
Promoter Dean Lonergan, disclosed that Sydney’s Bankwest Stadium is in the running to host the trilogy.
Arum and Lonergan had previously worked together in 2017 when they staged Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn in Brisbane, and the two promoters came together to stage Horn vs. Terence Crawford in 2018 in Las Vegas.
“When Bob came out and said that we are talking to 'our friends in Australia', I’m the one he’s talking to,” Lonergan told the Herald. “It’s my proposal, I put it to him with budgets, how we’d do it, the whole lot.
“Bob has been an incredible partner and ally for me in the world of boxing. I just had a thought six weeks ago that if these guys can’t do a major fight in Las Vegas or New York, why not come down here where I know we can get a crowd. We are flexible around the timing, but if we did it at 1.30pm on Boxing Day, it would be beamed back into the States on Christmas night.
“It’s an excellent relationship, I have enormous respect for Bob since he came down here with Manny Pacquiao. We’ve done a few deals like when Jeff fought Terence Crawford. We had a deal on the table to fight Ryota Murata, the middleweight champion, but unfortunately it didn’t eventuate because of the loss to Michael Zerafa. This could be a massive historical event."
Fury and Wilder fought the first time at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The contest ended in a controversial twelve round split draw.
The rematch took place in February at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Fury stopped Wilder in seven rounds to capture the WBC heavyweight title.
In the aftermath of the second fight, Wilder exercised his contractual option for an immediate rematch.
