Retired super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24KOs) has laughed off the idea that he could be beaten by WBC/IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight king Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs).
This past weekend in Monte Carlo, Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler sat down with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, who handle Froch, and during that time they discussed the idea of the fight - in very loose terms since Froch is retired.
Froch has not fought since May of 2014, when he knocked out George Groves before a record crowd of 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium. He officially announced his retirement from the sport in July of last year.
According to Hearn, Golovkin and his team are trying to lure Froch out of retirement.
Hearn said to reporter Chris McKenna: “Carl text me and said ‘what weight would Golovkin fight me at?’ and I said ‘172lb’ and Loeffler said ‘170’. I know exactly what Loeffler is trying to do and that is entice him out. I will say this that would have been one of the great, great fights and it might still be.”
There were some discussions about a Froch vs. Golovkin fight in 2015. Froch decided to retire instead of taking the fight.
According to Froch, Golovkin's handlers were trying to get him to a catch-weight of 166-pounds and by that point Froch was already unable to even make the super middleweight limit of 168. Froch wanted the fight at a catch-weight of 172-pounds.
Froch firmly believes that Golovkin is just too small for him and the size difference would play a very big role if they had ever stepped foot in the ring.
"The Golovkin thing came up and I said ‘fight me at 172-pounds and I’ll think about it’ and he wanted me to go down to 166. He wouldn’t even come up to super-middle and I was already retired by that point,” Froch told Boxing News.
“Gennady Golovkin is a small middleweight, I’m a big super-middleweight. The fight was maybe talked about a year after I retired and it was never going to happen. Golovkin cannot win a fight against me, he’s not big enough. You can’t talk about Golovkin in the same breath as me. If he thinks he can beat me, he’s not from planet Earth. He’s a very good fighter, but who has he beaten?”
