Tuesday day afternoon was media day for Miguel Cotto at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. As the Puerto Rican star prepared to meet the press, you saw Frankie Gomez winding down his days work on the stationary bike.
'the Pitbull' was scheduled to face Humberto Soto as the co-main on HBO on May 9th underneath Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez but essentially missed weight by a whole weight class as he came in at just a shade over 147 pounds. The contracted weight for that match-up was 141 pounds. The fight was eventually scrapped leaving both HBO and Golden Boy Promotions non-plussed.
Gomez, who has dutifully coming to the gym since that lost weekend, says he has learned his lesson.
"Yes, I did,"he admitted."First and last time this is going to happen."
But honestly, this isn't the first time he's had issues with commitment and discipline. When asked what was the mistakes leading into this snafu, he explained,"I just went up too high in weight and got sick a few days and that messed up my whole ryhthm, my weight."
Asked when he expects to return, he answered,"Not sure yet, maybe in July. I don't know exactly."
The 23-year old Gomez has a professional ledger of 18-0 (13 KO's).
The question is, can he make the junior welterweight limit?
"Yeah, I think so," he claimed.
