Initially the WBA mandated that Gennady Golovkin would have to defend his middleweight strap against Australian Jerrod Fletcher. It was met with derision and ultimately never came about for a myriad of reasons.
Golovkin will instead meet former unified 160-pound champion Daniel Geale on July 26 at Madison Square Garden in New York. While Fletcher squares of against Daniel Jacobs for the vacant WBA "regular" title a couple of weeks later on August 9 a few miles away at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY.
Fletcher (18-1, 10 knockouts) views Golovkin-Geale with full of intrigue.
“Golovkin vs GGG will be an interesting fight for sure,” Fletcher told BoxingScene.com “Daniel is very confident that he can get the job done in what will be a tough fight.”
The 30-year old Australian see’s this as GGG’s toughest test to date.
“We’ve said all along that GGG hasn’t fought a true boxer for a while, certainly in this current title winning streak.
“His team choosing to keep fighting walk forward fighters, that suits Golovkin’s ‘get them out of there’ style. Geale won’t stand in front of him to be hit, that’s for sure. Golovkin’s biggest test to date but one he’s expected to get through. The winner will be crowned the WBA super champion and I’ll happily fight the winner.”
