BoxingScene.com spoke with legendary promoter Don King, who was in Las Vegas for the kick-off press conference to announce the Showtime Bantamweight Final between IBF champion Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares, which is scheduled for August 13.
IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (23-0) was the topic of our conversation. King said that the Tallahassee, FL native is the type of fighter that the premium networks should be showcasing. He said the only thing that the all action fighter is missing is exposure.
"Tavoris is a throwback fighter. He is a very exciting fighter. The networks need to know that this is the type of fighter that the people want to see. You guys (the media) should write about him more often," King told BoxingScene.
Over the past few months there have been rumors that a Tavoris Cloud-Jean Pascal clash may be in the works. Pascal was ringside for Cloud's knockout win over Yusaf Mack last month. The 80 year old promoter said that he is very interested in making that fight and that he recently spoke to Pascal's promoter Yvon Michel.
"I just spoke to Yvon (about that) the other day. I think it would be a great fight."
With few remaining open dates on HBO and Showtime, finding a slot for the fan friendly fight will be a challenge. King said that he has no problem with the fight taking place in Pascal's backyard but that the fight deserved main event treatment. King said, "Cloud and Pascal is not an undercard fight. They deserve to be the main event. Cloud is a champion and Pascal is a former champion. They should be the main event. We have no issues in bringing the fight to Canada. That is where we can bring a good gate."
