Danny “Swift” Garcia is enjoying his latest victory over Zab Judah as the undefeated WBC & WBA Junior Welterweight champion continues to progress and rise in a very talented division. The Philadelphia fighter has become a target at 140 as he’s a unified champion and holds wins over Amir Khan, Erik Morales and now Judah.
A fight that is slated to happen is Garcia versus the winner of the Lamont Peterson-Lucas Matthysse showdown which will be taking place May 18th. According to Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer, they are conducting a 140 pound tourney with Garcia-Judah and Peterson-Matthysse being the first leg of the tournament. The winners will then face off and the last man standing after that will face Amir Khan in the finale.
Garcia was asked about his thoughts regarding Khan being given a free pass to the end in the tournament. While Garcia says he doesn’t care who he fights, he revealed his manager Al Haymon never informed him he’d be taking place in such a tourney.
“Well first off all, the tournament, it was just a verbal thing. Because my manager, I talk to Al Haymon three times a week on the phone and he was never like 'hey you're going to fight the winner out of these dudes, there's going to be a tournament'. None of that. So you know, Richard [Schaefer] might've said it. And if Al Haymon says I got to do it, then I'm doing it. But I beat Khan one time, I'll beat him again [and] easier this time” Garcia would tell BoxingScene.
Some accused Garcia of being reluctant to face Matthysse who is regarded as the most avoided fighter in the division but Garcia has informed he has no problem facing the hard hitting Argentinean. In fact Garcia declares he is the best fighter at 140 pounds and also the most skilled.
“It don't matter who I fight. I'm the best in my division. I know I'm the best. I'm the most versatile boxer in my division. You know I can bang, I can box. I'm counter punching counter punchers. You know Zab Judah was a counter puncher and I was countering him and hurting him off counter punches. So I bring a lot to the table. I'm dedicated and I feel like it’s my time and I'm going to keep winning” said Garcia.
Garcia versus the winner of Peterson-Matthysse will only equal good news for boxing fans as any mix of those three names would generate a must see action fight. For the moment, Garcia will take break and await his next assignment and is willing to take on all comers.
