NEW YORK – Danny Garcia and Danny Gonzalez both came in under the junior middleweight limit for their 10-round main event on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Garcia, 37-4 (21 KOs), came in at 153.6lbs on Friday, while Gonzalez, 22-4-1 (7 KOs), was 153.4lbs for his first official fight above welterweight. Garcia, the former two-division champion, has said this may be his final fight as he transitions into his post-fighting life as a promoter. The 37-year-old from North Philadelphia is promoting this card – his sixth ever – under his Swift Promotions banner. Gonzalez, a native of the Woodhaven section of Queens, hopes this fight will serve as a springboard to his first ever world title opportunity.
In the co-featured bout, Dominique “Dimes” Crowder weighed in at the 118lbs limit while Fernando Diaz was slightly lighter at 117.6lbs. Crowder, 18-0 (11 KOs), of Baltimore is fighting for the first time since last November after his fight in July on the Jesse Rodriguez vs. Phumelela Cafu 115lbs unification fight card was canceled.
Diaz, 16-5-1 (6 KOs), of Riverside, California is riding a three-fight winning streak.
In eight-round heavyweight action, Damian Knyba, 16-0 (10 KOs), a New Jersey-based fighter from Poland, weighed 259.8lbs, while his opponent, the Philadelphia-based Polish-American Joey Dawejko, 28-13-4 (16 KOs), weighed in at 259lbs.
There were no fights that fell out at the weigh-in, though a few contract weights had to be adjusted – with a few dollars changing hands – in order to reach new agreements. The most dramatic weight miss came from Jahanzeb Rizwan, who missed the 160lbs limit by nearly a full division for his pro debut, coming in at 167.4lbs. His opponent, Travon Millage, 0-1, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, originally weighed 159.6lbs but had to return to the scale to register an official weight of 161.4lbs. Rizwan, 21, of the Bronx, represented Pakistan at the 2024 Olympic world qualifiers.
Another notable miss was Jose Angulo, 17-10 (10 KOs), who came in at 157.2lbs, 3.2lbs over the 154lbs contract weight, for his eight-round fight with Staten Island’s Reshat Mati, 15-0 (8 KOs), who weighed 152.6lbs.
