Newly crowned WBC Junior Welterweight champion Danny “Swift” Garcia stopped by BoxingScene.com’s official audio show The Boxing Lab to talk about his tough win over Mexican legend Erik Morales.
It was a classic case of youth versus experience as Morales who has a significant amount of miles on his odometer took on a younger, fresher and hungry fighter in Garcia. Even with the victory, Garcia had to go to war with the aging veteran and learned a lot in the process.
“See, one thing about Morales, what I learned in there in the fight was he’s old in age but he’s real fast and young with his mind. And that’s why he was able to hit me with the punches that he hit me with because I was faster with my body and he was a little faster with his brain” explained Garcia.
“That’s what I learned in the fight; that it’s all mental. It’s about being smart and its going to help me grow as a fighter”.
While Morales has been able to resurrect his career and win a history making 4th world title in a fourth weight class in the process, many are wondering if it’s finally time for the Tijuana legend to hang up the gloves for good. After fighting Morales this past Saturday, Garcia feels Morales could still continue on.
“I think he still has fight in him. I think he’s a great fighter. You got to give him the right fights but I still think he can beat a lot of people out there. He’s a legendary fighter. He’s smart” said the Philadelphia native.
Garcia is still enjoying his victory and admits the whole experience still seems surreal and hasn’t fully sunk in yet. While it’s still too early to know what’s next for him, he’s happy he doesn’t have to chase any names anymore; they’ll come to him.
“Now that I’m champion I don’t really have to point anybody out. I don’t have to call anybody’s name out. Everyone wants to be a champion so all I got to do is sit back, train, get the call and accept the challenge. I don’t have to point them out; all I have to do is take them down now”.
