WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) is willing to drop down to the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds for one fight only - a dream match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26KOs).
Retire referee and ESPN Deportes expert analyst Joe Cortez has serious doubts about Golovkin's ability to make that weight. He even doubts Golovkin is capable of making any catch-weight limit for such a fight.
"No, Golovkin cannot make that weight, he’s a full fledged middleweight and Mayweather walks around at 150-pounds. It would be very difficult for Golovkin to come down and Mayweather definitely won’t go up to 160-pounds. I don’t even think Golovkin can make a catch weight," Cortez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Mayweather retired on September 12th, after winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Andre Berto.
Cortez expects Mayweather to return next year to pursue his 50th win - to break the undefeated record of legendary heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.
"Yes, I think that’s what’s gonna happen. I think he’s gonna fight there at the new arena which is gonna open up in April, 2016. I think for Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday, that’s a date where they would have a big fight made. Maybe that’s gonna be the date where they have the big fight for that weekend," Cortez said.
"I predict that Mayweather will fight and open up that venue and then after he ties Rocky Marciano’s record, then he’s gonna say, 'Now I want one more to break it.' If he gets that close to breaking the record, why not go for it? I predict he’ll have two more before he finally retires. He’ll probably walk away with another two hundred million dollars before he pack it up."
