Vito Mielnicki Jnr’s record now carries one less blemish.
BoxingScene has confirmed that the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has nullified Mielnicki’s 10-round majority draw with Northern Ireland’s Connor Coyle. The February 14 verdict was changed to a “no contest,” as per a settlement reached between Coyle and the commission due to an adverse finding from a post-fight drug test.
A message left with NYSAC officials was not immediately returned as this article went to publication. However, a commission notification obtained by BoxingScene informed Mielnicki and his team that “following an investigation by [NYSAC] into [Mielnicki’s] February 14, 2025 bout at Madison Square Garden, administrative action has been taken in connection with … Mr. Connor Coyle.
“As part of a formal settlement with the Commission, Mr. Coyle has agreed – among other terms – to an adjustment of the official bout result. Accordingly, the outcome… has been changed from a ‘Majority Draw’ to a ‘No Contest.’”
Mielnicki-Coyle took place on the Keyshawn Davis-Denys Berinchyk-headlined ESPN show from The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. New Jersey’s Mielnicki won 96-94 on the scorecard of judge Tom Carusone, while judges Ken Ezzo and Kevin Morgan had the fight dead even at 95-95 after 10 entertaining rounds at middleweight.
Coyle’s strong second-half surge helped avoid what would have otherwise resulted in his first defeat. He was awarded the final four rounds on Morgan’s scorecard after having trailed 59-55 to that point.
The bout marked Mielnicki’s middleweight debut, as the 23-year-old outgrew the junior middleweight division after just three years.
Coyle, 21-0 (9 KOs, 1 NC) – a career middleweight – has not fought since that night. The length of his current absence is expected to extend deeper into the year.
Terms of his settlement with the commission were not immediately made clear, though he remains under indefinite suspension.
Mielnicki, 20-1 (12 KOs, 1 NC) has since returned, scoring a 10-round shutout win over the previously unbeaten Kamil Gardzielik at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Their June 21 ESPN+ headliner saw Mielnicki win every round and also floor Gardzielik in the third en route to the lopsided victory.
The bout marked Mielnicki’s third straight in a region – NYC and North Jersey – where he remains a reliable box office draw. His marketability has been put to proper use by Top Rank, who signed Mielnicki last summer and has promoted his last four contests.
Mielnicki is unbeaten in his past 14 starts following an April 2021 majority decision defeat to James Martin in Los Angeles, California. The bout now remains the lone blemish on his current record, given Monday’s ruling.
