Vito Mielnicki Jnr is coming off a knockout win over unbeaten Samuel Nmomah, and is happy that he won’t have to train through the holiday season this year.
Mielnicki stopped Nmonah in the ninth round on Saturday in a middleweight bout from the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Mielnicki, 22-1 (13 KOs), isn’t just overjoyed with his win. He is happy that this year he can spend time with his family, as he fought on Christmas Day in 2021, and since then has had training camps that run through the holiday season.
“The past few years, I have been away for the holidays,” Mielnicki Jnr told BoxingScene. “Whether I am in training camp, whether I am fighting on Christmas, or I am sparring on Thanksgiving.”
Mielnicki, a 23-year-old from Roseland, New Jersey, turned professional in 2019, and signed with Top Rank just last year. Before this fight, BoxingScene reported that Mielnicki was no longer being promoted by Top Rank. Mielnicki shed some light on his current situation.
“I know there was some talk that I signed with Zuffa Boxing, I have not signed with Zuffa Boxing,” Mielnicki said. “I am a free agent. I am just going to talk it over [with my team] and see where we are at.”
Mielnicki is currently ranked No. 6 by the WBO, which has Janibek Alimkhaunly as the titleholder of their organization. Mielnicki feels that by starting off the pay-per-view portion of Saturday’s fight card and getting a stoppage, he has vaulted himself into the position for a compelling fight in the future.
“I feel the way I put a stamp on the fight was necessary and needed,” Mielnicki said. “I feel like I did my job.”
After a full training camp with his trainer, Ronnie Shields, Mielnicki is now eager to spend his first holiday at home after years of sacrifice in training camp over the holiday season.
“To sit back and enjoy, eat whatever I want to eat,” Mielnicki said. “It is a bit of relief, and I am glad to get that fight in before the holidays.”
