Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. insists that his son, WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31KOs), will face Argentine boxer Sergio 'Maravilla' Martinez (49-2-2, 28KOs) on September 15 in Las Vegas. Chavez is first going to fight on June 16th in El Paso, Texas, but the opponent has not been finalized.
"Julio will fight in El Paso Texas on June 16, and if everything comes to an arrangement, which we know it will, he will fight on September 15 in Las Vegas. Definitely this fight [with Martinez] will take place. The curiosity of the people is too much," Chavez Sr. said.
But, Chavez Sr. is not happy with Martinez's recent request for Julio Jr. to go through a random Olympic-style drug testing protocol.
"The negotiations went very well, except that Martinez wants my son to take Olympic anti-doping tests. He is crazy, because if you want that - then he go to the Olympics. I am against it because that's not being done to any [of the other] world champions. [It's only being done to] those who are going to the Olympics," Chavez Sr. said.
"He's a great fighter, but he does not sell well and has a non-commercial [fighting] style, which is not pleasing and stinks. Definitely this fight will be done because the curiosity of the people is too much," Chavez Sr. said.
