Jose "Chepo" Reynoso, trainer of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs), watched Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin's eight round stoppage of David Lemieux on October 18th at New York's Madison Square Garden. Golovkin unified the WBA/IBF/IBO world middleweight titles with the victory.
Canelo will go for his own piece of the middleweight puzzle, when he faces WBC champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs) of Puerto Rico on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View will carry the bout. The fight is taking place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds.
Chepo was not surprised by the victory, because Lemieux was such a big underdog.
"Yes, we saw it. It was a one-sided fight and somewhat comfortable for Golovkin. He came and did his work, and in the end his victory was no surprise. I think the odds were 16-1 in Las Vegas," said Chepo to Rigo Cervantez.
The winner of Cotto-Canelo has been ordered to make a mandatory defense against Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs). That probably won't happen - at least in the near future - as Canelo has no intention, at the moment, of competing in the middleweight division.
"Saul is a natural 154-pounder. However, like very boxer he has to diet, take care of himself," Chepo said.
"I believe that in the future there are many very interesting fights for Saul. Golovkin is a great fighter with enormous prestige and we want to fight the best and he is one of them."
"We try not to look to the future and instead stay focused on reality. Right now what's coming is Cotto - and after him, we will sit down and discuss the future, but never say never."
