Saul “Canelo” Alvarez may be young but he assured everyone at his media day in Big Bear, CA that he is ready for the huge task of taking on undefeated pound for pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather on September 14th.
In 44 fights, 44 opponents have come up short as in 17 years no one has been able to decipher the code that is Floyd Mayweather. Alvarez will be the 45th fighter to make an attempt to remove the zero from Floyd’s loss column and he believes he has the solution to be able to beat him. He feels others have taken the wrong approach and he will be the first to show how to do it the proper way.
“I think [his previous opponents] get desperate. They want to rip his head off. They want to hit him everywhere and tear his head off but I don't think that's how you do it. There's different ways to win and September 14th you'll see how” said a confident Alvarez to a sea of reporters.
Alvarez believes most opponents go in with a game plan and can’t fully enforce it throughout the entire duration of the bout and eventually fall right into Mayweather’s fight. Mayweather’s bout with Cotto which many believe was one of the more difficult fights of Floyd’s career, is pointed out by Alvarez who feels Cotto did good; he just couldn’t sustain his effectiveness.
“Cotto did a great fight in two to three rounds but ultimately he would lose his head and fall into Mayweather's game plan and that's when Mayweather would hit him. When he stuck to his game plan he penetrated his guard and hit him good. He fought a real good fight but obviously he didn't fight the whole fight like in the rounds where he penetrated the guard. The rounds varied and that's what made him lose but he fought a good fight and that's where you can learn and take things away from that fight” revealed Alvarez.
While nobody has given Mayweather a loss, Canelo feels there have been fighters who have had great success against him. He points out three of Mayweather’s opponents who he feels gave him his toughest tests and he hopes to be able to do the same.
“I think Cotto gave him a good fight, he fought him well. Oscar De La Hoya. For me Oscar De La Hoya won their fight. Jose Luis Castillo gave him a good fight. A lot of people say he won that fight but to me, honestly, he didn't win that fight but he did give him a good fight. I think those are the fights where his opponents have been able to penetrate his guard and he had difficult times” said the current WBC Light Middleweight champion.
The fight is less than 3 weeks away and we will soon be able to find out if Canelo will be the first to solve the puzzle or one of many that has fallen victim to it.
