World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman has revealed to BoxingScene.com that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) is in jeopardy of losing his status as the WBC welterweight champion, because the boxer is moving up to junior middleweight to fight Miguel Cotto for the WBA championship on May 5th, and then Mayweather will spend three months in jail for a domestic abuse charge.
As a result, the perennial number one contender, who also holds the WBC silver title - unbeaten Turkish boxer Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KOs) - will collide with Robert 'The Ghost' Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) for the vacant interim belt, says Sulaiman.
The fight between Aydin and Guerrero, who makes his welterweight debut, will take place on a Showtime televised card on July 28 in San Jose, California.
The winner would be first in line to fight Mayweather for the full title, once the boxer is released.
