This past Saturday night in New York City, two-time Olympic gold medal winner Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4KOs) made history by winning his second divisional title in his seventh professional fight.
It took Lomachenko five rounds to completely dismantle and brutally stop Roman "Rocky" Martinez to capture the WBO super featherweight world title.
Regarded by many as the greatest amateur in boxing history, Lomachenko is already talking about more divisional titles in the higher weight divisions. He wants to continue making history by winning a third world title by his tenth pro fight.
His promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, has been singing his praises for the last two years and telling everyone that Lomachenko would one day become the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
At the moment, two other Eastern European fighters are holding higher positions on almost every respectable pound-for-pound list. Middleweight king Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin and light heavyweight destroyer Sergey Kovalev are currently viewed by many as the best two fighters Eastern Euro fighters on the scene.
Arum agrees that Golovkin and Kovalev are great fighters, but he confidently expects Lomachenko to surpass both of them when everything is said and done - because he says Lomachenko is just simply a better overall fighter.
"Golovkin and Kovalev are terrific fighters - there is no argument. They are great punchers and everything - but they don't have the skills of Lomachenko. And he could punch pretty good also. He has a lot of style, but he punches pretty good," Arum said.
"I'm telling you...everyone thought I was bullsh*tting because I'm a big bullsh*tter. I've been telling all of you guys how great this guy is. There is a limit to bullsh*t and I'm not going to say something like that unless this kid can back it up."
