WBO Middleweight champion Andy Lee says he would make it a “shootout” if he ever fought the IBF, IBO and WBA 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin.
Lee makes the first defence of his title against his mandatory challenger Billy Joe Saunders on December 19 at Manchester Arena live on Boxnation. The Irishman told Boxnation’s Charlie Webster that he is the one man who could give the Kazakh wrecking ball a fight.
“If there’s anyone who would give him a fight in the division, it’s me,” said the 31-year-old.
“People go in there and are beaten before the bell rings, I am not afraid.”
With Lee holding a 65% KO percentage from his (34-2-1, 24 KOs) record and Golovkin a 91% KO percentage from his own unbeaten resume of (34-0, 31 KOs) it seems safe to say that a fight between the two titlists would probably not go the distance.
“If we go in there, it’s going to be a war. I would train for a six round fight and make it a shootout," said Lee.
A fight between Lee and Golovkin would also be a rematch from their fight at the 2003 World Amateur Championships.Lee was beaten on points by the Kazakh star who went on to claim the middleweight gold medal in Bangkok by also defeating Lucian Bute and Matt Korobov along the way.
