For the second time this year, WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward is attempting to break his promotional contract with Dan Goossen, according to legal documents filed in L.A. County Superior Court ... in which Ward claims Goossen Tutor Promotions violated states laws by signing him to a series of contracts that lock him up until 2016.
Ward says he signed the initial deal back in 2004, and because California labor laws prevent companies from signing people for more than 7 years at a time, he should be able to leave Goossen for greener pastures. He wants a judge to void the contract as soon as possible.
Ward is turning to Oscar De La Hoya for support (at least, in his legal documents) stated in his paper that De La Hoya filed a similar lawsuit against Top Rank back in 2001 ... and won... so he should get the same result.
In the first half of the year, Ward attempted to break ties with Goossen, but in June the California State Athletic Commission ruled against him at arbitration and upheld Goossen's promotional contract.
