IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander was not surprised with Danny Garcia (27-0, 16KOs) retaining his WBC/WBA junior welterweight titles last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Garcia won a twelve round unanimous decision over mandatory challenger Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32KOs).
Alexander, at 140-pounds, won a ten round split decision over Matthysse in 2011. That was Alexander's final match at junior welterweight. Alexander noted afterwards that he struggled to make weight for the bout with Matthysse.
Although he wasn't surprised that Garcia won, he was surprised at how well Garcia was able to deal with Matthysse.
"I told people that Danny Garcia, this kid is tough and he don't get the credit that he deserve. I told people that Matthysse's power was very overrated. He caught Danny a few times and he caught me a few times clean. His power is very overrated. I try to tell people, but I was surprised that [Danny beat] him in the fashion that he did, I was surprised about that. Danny was too much for him. He's one-dimensional. If he don't get you with one big shot then oh well," Alexander told BoxingScene.com.
