Former three division world champion Abner Mares (31-3-1, 15 KOs) is very motivated to move up in weight for a showdown with WBA super featherweight king Gervonta Davis (20-0, 19 KOs).
The fight has been mentioned in recent weeks.
Davis' promoter, Floyd Mayweather, has expressed interest in making the fight happen.
Robert Garcia, the head trainer for Mares, has spoken to his boxer about the contest - and there is no issue with making it happen.
Despite being a huge underdog, Mares is very eager to finalize that opportunity.
According to Garcia, the scenario of being the big underdog is motivating Mares to secure that potential clash with Davis.
"I talked to Abner, he started training two weeks ago and he is motivated by the fight with Gervonta, another difficult challenge, but like Mikey [Garcia], they are warriors and want the best challenges, they want to achieve things that people think are impossible. And in doing that, he wants to fight with Gervonta Davis, who for me is the best at 130 pounds. [Mares] will be looking for something big," Robert Garcia said to ESPN Deportes.
Mares is coming off a twelve round decision loss in his rematch with Leo Santa Cruz, which took place on June 9th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. It was Mares' first decision loss since losing another twelve round decision in August 2015, also to Santa Cruz.
Davis was in action back in April, when he demolished Jesus Cuellar in three easy rounds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Cuellar was down three times in the fight. The contest was a complete mismatch from start to finish.
Mares fought to a twelve round decision win over Cuellar in December 2016.
Davis has stopped every opponent for the last four years - including recently crowned WBO lightweight world champion Jose Pedraza.
