OSAKA – Kosei Tanaka set the stage for a light flyweight title unification bout when he defended his World Boxing Organization crown in the weight category Wednesday at Edion Arena Osaka. IBF super bantamweight champion Yukinori Oguni will make his first title defense against third-ranked Ryosuke Iwasa on Sept. 13, his Kadoebi Houseki Boxing Gym said Thursday. Oguni, 29, described Iwasa as an “opponent I least want to fight,” telling a news conference that he expects the match at Edion Arena Osaka to be “difficult” but wants to “win confidently.”

Cruiserweight: Victor Ramirez announced his retirement, making room for WBA sub-titlist Beibut Shumenov to enter the top ten. Jr. Lightweight: It wasn’t as easy the second time around but Jezreel Corrales defeated Takashi Uchiyama for a second time, coming off the floor to win a split decision on the road. It was a game effort on the road and leaves the ratings as they were.

The New Year's Eve boxing tradition in Japan continues to shake up awards season.
