Tim Tszyu will have to wait for his chance to contend for the undisputed junior middleweight championship.

The second-generation boxer and his team have come to grips with that reality, but not with the prospect of remaining sidelined until the fight makes its way back to the boxing schedule.

Glen Jennings, Tszyu’s career-long manager, alerted media and fans alike of the ongoing team effort to get the unbeaten Australian back in the ring as planned. The 28-year-old from Rockdale, New South Wales was due to face Houston’s Charlo (35-1-1, 19KOs) atop a January 28 Showtime telecast from Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas. However, the event was postponed on Christmas Eve after medical reports confirmed that Charlo broke his left hand in two places during a December 20 sparring session.

“Just a quick update as to where to from here, since Charlo injury postponed Jan. 28 undisputed title (fight),” Jennings announced on Monday. “Team Tszyu will continue on in camp USA whilst (promoter) Matt Rose and I are working to find a replacement fight for Tim to keep busy.

“You all know Tim can’t sit around waiting, so we are exploring all options for a fight ASAP. Tim is disappointed but focused still on what comes next. He’s a fighter, he wants to fight, so waiting for Charlo recovery is not an option. Until then, training continues in USA.”

Representatives from Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) and Showtime were not in a position to comment on the claim, as the situation remains fluid.

Tszyu (21-0, 15KOs) has not fought since March 26, when he survived an opening round knockdown to outpoint 2012 U.S. Olympia and former title challenger Terrel Gausha in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The bout marked the U.S. debut for Tszyu, who then underwent surgery on both hands—a clean-out of both sets of knuckles—prior to Charlo’s May 14 knockout win over Brian Castano to fully unify the 154-pound division.

As it stood, Tszyu—whose father Kostya is a Hall of Fame former undisputed 140-pound champion—was looking at a career-long layoff of ten months ahead of the biggest fight of his career. Charlo was prepared to go eight months between fights, but is now sidelined for at least two months. Even with an available fight date for the moment the 154-pound champ is cleared to fight, Tszyu would be looking at a minimum of a year-long inactive stretch.

The best-case scenario sought by his team is to maintain the January time frame in a non-title fight while waiting out Charlo’s recovery process.

“Tim will be ready for Charlo once he’s cleared for undisputed and Tim will be even more determined to bring all (four) belts home,” vowed Jennings. “These things are part of boxing. We just dust ourselves off, regroup and get back to what we do best.”
