Luis Upsets Undefeated Dargan; Barrera Batters Lacy

27-year old Lightweight Tony Luis (19-2, 7 KO) of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, scored two knockdowns, got credit for one, and outclassed previously undefeated 29-year old Karl Dargan (17-1, 9 KO) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for a clear 10-round unanimous decision. Luis has been on the receiving end of questionable decisions in the past. Friday night at the Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, the judges nailed it. And Luis nailed Dargan. Luis weighed in at 134 ¼, Dargan at 135. The referee was Johnny Callas. Moving and boxing, Dargan appeared to control the first two rounds. In the third, a leaping shot from Luis ended with Dargan spilling to the floor. Referee Johnny Callas ruled it a slip but replays showed otherwise. Luis kept that offensive momentum in the next two rounds. Staying close, Luis went to work and controlled Dargan at close quarters. Dargan tried to counter in spots but Luis had seized a clear edge as the fight hit the halfway mark after five.

BoxingScene.com has been advised that undefeated Cuban light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera (14-0) will face former champion Jeff Lacy (27-5) on January 30th at Foxwoods in Connecticut. The fight is scheduled for 8 rounds and will serve as the swing bout underneath the Karl Dargan-Tony Luis main event that will be televised on ESPN2. Barrera had a successful 2014 campaign, going 4-0 with 3 knockouts.

- In the show’s opening bout, lightweight prospect Ryan Martin scored a second-round stoppage over Martin Cardona. Martin, who is signed with rapper/promoter 50 Cent, dropped Cardona with a left hook to the liver in the opening round and returned to the body one round later for the finishing blow. The time of the stoppage was 1:38. Martin, 21, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, improves to 9-0 (5 KOs). Cardona, 23, of Tucson, Arizona, falls to 17-4 (12 KOs).

Bernard Hopkins and Sergey Kovalev both made weight for their light heavyweight unification bout, with Hopkins coming in at 173.5 pounds and Kovalev at 174.5 in advance of their fight Saturday night on HBO from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Tyron Zeuge (15-0, 9 KOs) will defend his IBF International title on December 6 at the EWE Arena in Oldenburg, Germany. The 22 year-old super middleweight will face Croatian veteran Stjepan Bozic (29-8, 19 KOs) in a fight coach Karsten Roewer has described as the first real test of Zeuge’s pro career. “Bozic is a very experienced fighter,” said Roewer. “He is a former world title challenger who has previously shared the ring with some great boxers including Arthur Abraham. This is a big step up for Tyron and the first real test in the professional ranks. He cannot afford to take Bozic lightly.”

The bout will be part of the Main Events card that will take place at Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, CT. NBC Sports Network is scheduled to televise the main event bout between cruiserweights Thabiso Mchunu and Garrett Wilson, along with the co-feature bout between lightweights Karl Dargan and Angino Perez.
