John Ryder is very eager to pull off a major upset when he challenges WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith next Saturday night in Liverpool.

Should Smith win his upcoming bout, he will head into 2020 with major fights on his mind.

The biggest target on his list is Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez, who holds the WBA's "regular" title at 168-pounds. Canelo also holds the WBA title at middleweight, and the WBO world title at light heavyweight.

But Ryder is looking to secure his own crack at Canelo.

And he intends to pull off a major upset to secure that lucrative shot and a lot more.

Ryder believes Smith and his team are overlooking him.

"Massively. But he is the world champion and the city's big dream of a show at Anfield. He is the front-runner but I'm coming to cause the upset and, if I beat Smith, there will be no Anfield show," Ryder told Sky Sports.

"They might need to find a new headliner. I'd take a lot of pleasure in making the first boxing show at the Emirates Stadium. I'd take pleasure in going to Vegas and fighting Canelo."

Ryder has been waiting for the opportunity his entire career. He strongly feels that all of the pressure is on Smith, who is widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the UK - and the leading force in the super middleweight division.

"Smith is No 1 for a reason and I can't take my eye off the ball with him. Smith hasn't put a foot wrong, looked good in beating George Groves and Hassan N'Dam, but I just believe I can exploit him. I'm a different kettle of fish to what he's faced before," Ryder said.

"I'm ready to embrace it all. The pressure is more on him. I'm relishing the opportunity - timing is everything, and I believe it is now. I'm going to cause the upset. There is no better time for me to become a world champion than now."
