Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach does not expect a middleweight showdown between Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0-31KOs)and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) to take place in the fall.
Golovkin, who has the WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight belts, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC world title.
Both boxers have fights lined up in the coming months. Should they both prevail, the World Boxing Council has ordered them to collide in the fall.
Roach doubts the fight will happen, because he can't see Golden Boy Promotions matching their biggest star against such dangerous opponent.
"I don’t think that fight will happen, why would they take a chance with their best selling guy? In my opinion I don’t think that fight will happen because it makes no sense," Roach told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Canelo returns on May 7th against Amir Khan at a catch-weight of 155-pounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Golovkin is back on April 23rd against IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade at the Forum in Los Angeles, California.
Roach went up against Canelo last November, when Miguel Cotto lost a twelve round unanimous decision to the Mexican star.
The veteran coach still believes Cotto won that bout and now he's waiting to get a solid date and opponent for his boxer. Cotto's return is tentative for June 18th in New York.
"I thought he won that fight, it was a good fight, I liked it. Miguel is talking about maybe fighting in June and I look forward to working with him. We don’t have an opponent yet but whoever they pick, I will get him ready," Roach said.
