Former lightweight contender Ray Beltran has been suspended for nine months by the Nevada Athletic Commission due to his coming up positive for the banned substance stanozolol in testing done for his May 1 technical knockout win over Takahiro Ao. The commission voted unanimously on the punishment during its Aug. 13 meeting. Stanozolol, which is also known as Winstrol, is a steroid that also gets rid of fat without getting rid of muscle. Beltran had difficulty making the lightweight limit for the bout and came in half a pound over, meaning the vacant title they were fighting for remained vacant after the bout.
Perennial lightweight contender Raymundo Beltran was issued a temporary suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission during its monthly agenda hearing Thursday morning in Las Vegas. The suspension stems from a positive drug test for a banned substance after his May 1 win over Takahiro Aoh, also in Las Vegas. The temporary suspension was issued despite a plea from Beltran’s assigned lawyer, David Chesnoff pleading with the commission for a continuance on the commission request, in hopes of fast-forward to a hearing for a full suspension at the next available agenda meeting.

A co-feature for the HBO broadcast on June 27th - that has Timothy Bradley and Jesse Vargas squaring off for the vacant WBO welterweight belt - has been finalized. Raymundo Beltran and Humberto Soto will collide in a junior welterweight contest, with a title potentially at stake. Eric Gomez, V.P. and matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions, told BoxingScene.com on Friday - "It's going to be (Humberto)Soto-(Ray) Beltran. Right now it's a ten round fight. It could possibly be a twelve round fight if we get a title for it."
On May 1st, Ray Beltran was scheduled to fight Takahiro Ao for the vacant WBO lightweight title. But after failing to come in at the 135-pound limit, he relinquished his right to fight for the belt. He stopped the Japanese veteran in two emphatic rounds but came away without the coveted championship. But Beltran who's already back in the gym training says he is staying in the 135-pound class.
