Rafael Marquez: record, next fight and profile →

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ recently honored a few of the attendees at the 54th World Boxing Council Convention thanks to their record-breaking achievements in the sport of boxing.

Former world champion Rafael Marquez (41-9, 37KOs), 41-years-old, says he is not officially retired from the sport and wants one more fight as a farewell to his many fans.

NEW YORK (March 3, 2015) – SHOWTIME Sports will offer boxing fans a chance to relive one of boxing’s most intense and brutal rivalries as it rolls out content in celebration of the classic showdowns between Mexican legends Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez.

By Cliff Rold - Some find it sad when old champions fall to the hands of time and younger men. It can be. It can also be fitting. The phrase “going out on their shield” carries special meaning. The fighters willing to do that earn a special place in the hearts of the masses. In his last two contests, former 118 and 122 lb. champion Rafael Marquez went out on his shield. The fighting spirit remained. The fighting ability had waned too much. Efrain Esquivias knocked out the 38-year old Marquez in the ninth round on September 7, 2013. Eighteen years before, insanely matched with a former champion in his pro debut, he was stopped in eight. He came out the way he came in, a warrior through and through, fighting until the fight was beaten out of him. Some might call it sad. But there is honor in a career, and even an exit, like Marquez’s. He pondered retirement in the ring after the Esquivias fight. On September 20, it was reported by Salvador Rodriguez of ESPN Deportes that Marquez made the official announcement. Assuming this retirement holds and he is now at the end, it was for him a fitting conclusion. With Marquez clearly past that inevitable point of no return, it is an honor for those who observed his exciting career to ask:

Efrain Esquivias outlanded former two division champion Rafael Marquez nearly 4-1 in power shots in rounds five thru nine, getting the knockout.

Trainer Nacho Beristain has advised former champion Rafael Marquez (41-9, 37KOs) to retire from boxing. Last Saturday in California, the the 38-year-old veteran took a beating from underdog Efrain Esquivias. The fight was stopped in the ninth round, but not before Marquez took a lot of punishment and was dropped hard. He suffered a fractured orbital bone and had to be taken to the hospital afterwards. Nacho, who recently reunited with Marquez, believes the four-fight series with Israel Vazquez took a heavy toll on his boxer's body.

Esquivias is busier. The more experienced Marquez has faced FAR better competition. Marquez opponents (Mijares, Nishioka, JM Lopez) landed 48% of their power shots. Esquivias opponents (Alcantara, Martinez, Ramos, Romero) landed 38% of their power shots.

Through his first 16 professional fights, Efrain Esquivias was an unbeaten fighter. Winning came natural to him. Unfortunately, Esquivias has gone through a dry spell in his couple of fights, winless in his last three. Rather than take an easy bout, Esquivias will attempt to break this streak. He would also attempt to score a major upset in the process. Esquivias will face former world champion Rafael Marquez in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.

LOS ANGELES - Chris Arreola (35-3, 30 KO's), of Riverside, Calif. and Seth Mitchell (26-1-1, 19 KO's), of Brandywine, Md., got into a heated verbal exchange during Wednesday's final press conference for their 12-round heavyweight showdown for the WBC Silver Championship this Saturday, Sept. 7, on SHOWTIME BOXING: Special Edition live on SHOWTIME® immediately following ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Canelo Episode 3 Premiere, which begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
