Team Joyi Wants IBO To Order a Rematch With Budler

Nkosinathi Joyi’s trainer wants the IBO to order a rematch between his fighter and Hekkie Budler. Sipatho Handi, who also manages Joyi, said on Sunday the judges’ decision to award Budler a split-decision victory at Emperors Palace on Saturday night was “daylight robbery”. Budler retained his IBO strawweight title when two judges scored the bout in his favour, 115-113 and 116-113. The third had it 116-112 for Joyi, a former IBO and IBF champion. Handi said a complaint over the decision had been forwarded to the IBO, with the request for a rematch.

Hekkie Budler Fights Hard To Beat Joyi, Retains IBO Belt

Hekkie Budler produced the fight of his life to beat Nkosinathi Joyi on a split decision on Saturday night. Budler retained his IBO strawweight title by outscoring his fellow South African over twelve brilliant rounds at Emperors Palace east of Johannesburg. Judge Arthur Ellensohn from Germany made Joyi a 116-112 winner but Reg Thomson of the UK had Budler 116-113 ahead and Tony Nyangiwe from South Africa scored it 115-113 for Budler. Budler, seemingly borrowing a nickname from former SA cricket star Allan “White Lightnight” Donald for the night, used his hand speed and dazzling footwork to defeat the always threatening Joyi, a former IBO and IBF champion.

Johannesburg – A unification fight is on the cards for the winner of the IBO minimumweight title bout between defending champion Hekkie Budler and former IBF champion Nkosinathi Joyi on Saturday. “Negotiations are already underway for such an eventuality, with the WBC and IBF champions mooted as possible opponents against whoever emerges as the IBO champion on Saturday night,” Golden Gloves promoter Rodney Berman said on Tuesday. Joyi's manager-trainer Sipatho Handi proclaimed it was in effect “sealed and signed” who would be in line for any future unification contest.

Budler, Joyi To Receive Career High Purses For Clash

Hekkie Budler and Nkosinathi Joyi will earn the biggest purses ever paid to two SA strawweight boxers when they meet on June 15. Promoter Rodney Berman revealed this in Johannesburg on Tuesday when some of the fighters on the Emperors Palace bill went through their paces at Colin Nathan's Hot Box gym. Nathan said the bout against Joyi was the fight one Budler had dreamt about for years. "Hekkie is in the best shape of his career," said Nathan, who trains the IBO champion. "He is doing everything possible to deliver the best performance of his career." Joyi, who was regarded as the best SA boxer, pound for pound, before he lost his IBF title last year, was one of the boxers who did not attend the public workout on Tuesday. He is an internationally respected fighter whom Ring Magazine at one stage ranked as No 1 strawweight in the world.

East London – Nkosinathi Joyi bounced back in style when he won the the WBA interim mini-flyweight title in East London on Saturday night. Joyi stopped Argentine Walter Rojas in the first round to redeem himself, after Mexican Mario Rodriguez snatched away the South African's IBF minimumweight crown three months ago. It took Joyi only two minutes, 13 seconds to stop Rojas, who went into the fight with a record of 23 wins and two defeats.
