It’s another world title fight for a Filipino as Joey Canoy (W15 KO8 L3 D1) faces former minimumweight world champion Nkosinathi Joyi (W28 KO19 L5 D1) for the IBO world minimumweight belt on December 16, 2019 at the ICC Hotel in East London, South Africa.
THE camp of former world champion Nkosinathi “Mabhere” Joyi is blaming everyone but the boxer for his first round knock out defeat by Filipino Rey Loreto in Mdantsane, East London, South Africa earlier this year. Joyi was destroyed in less than two minutes after being bundled to the canvas twice forcing South African referee Tony Nyangiwe to stop the fight after the second knockdown without bothering to count. The stoppage which came after Loreto had dropped Joyi on the ropes with an uppercut following a knockdown from a left hook, was greeted with silence by the scores of fans which came to support Joyi as the fight was held just a few metres away from his NU 1 Mdantsane home.
IBO light flyweight champion Rey “Hitman” Loreto has retained his title with a stunning first round knockout of former champion Nkosinathi Joyi in a rematch in East London, South Africa. The rematch had been cancelled twice before, with the first plug being pulled last December before Loreto forced a postponement from February 28 when he underwent surgery for a swollen appendix two months ago which drastically cut down his sparring and his training regimen as he was recovering from the operation.
The on-again, off-again rematch between Rey Loreto and Nkosinathi Joyi will finally happen Sunday, March 22 in East London, South Africa. For the second time in as many fights, Loreto (19-13, 11KOs) pulled off a stunning upset in the junior flyweight division when they first met. Less than six months after shocking former strawweight titlist Pornsawan Porpramook, Loreto forced the boxing world to stand up and take notice with a jaw-dropping 3rd round knockout of Joyi last February. Loreto was a lightly regarded journeyman from Philippines prior to his current streak, having won three straight. Joyi (24-3, 17KOs) has not fought since the knockout loss. The former top-rated strawweight and long-reigning titlist has suffered all three career defeats in the span of his past five contests.
A third attempt is being made at getting Rey Loreto and Nkosinathi Joyi in the ring for a second time. Their twice postponed rematch is now confirmed to take place March 22 in South Africa. The bout was confirmed by International Boxing Organization (IBO) President Ed Levine, whose organization recognizes Loreto as its junior flyweight titlist.
Sadly for the fans looking forward to his return and possible career resurrection, efforts to bring Joyi to the boxing world were ultimately thwarted. The planned February 28 rematch between Rey Loreto and Nkosinathi Joyi in South Africa was cancelled at the 11th hour due to the lack of a supporting undercard. Several preliminary bouts fell through late in the week, leaving the promoters without enough time to replace them and thus forcing the local commission to withdraw its sanctioning of the show.

In a thrilling display of power, Filipino Rey Loreto impressively mauled and knocked out tough South African former world champion Nkosinathi Joyi to capture the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) Jr. Flyweight World Title on Saturday at The Salle des Etoiles in Monte Carlo, Principality of Monaco. South African referee Andile Matika waved off all actions declaring the knockout at the 49 second mark in round 3, and Loreto reaching his boyhood dreams of world title glory.
Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco - Welterweight contender Roman Belaev (13-0, 10KOs) won a iwde twelve round unanimous decision over Dean Byrne. The scores were 119-109, 120-106 and 119-109.
