Miguel Cotto: record, next fight and profile →
Junior middleweight contender James Kirkland is preparing himself for an HBO pay-per-view battle against former four division world champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, which is scheduled to take place on February 25th in Texas.
NEW YORK – James Kirkland isn’t sweating the contracted catch weight for his fight against Miguel Cotto because he isn’t worried about last-second sweating to shed that extra pound.
NEW YORK – Miguel Cotto would like another crack at Canelo Alvarez. If Puerto Rico’s Cotto can beat James Kirkland on February 25 in Frisco, Texas, the former four-division champion considers views a rematch with Alvarez as one of the most viable alternatives for what could be the last fight of Cotto’s career later this year.
NEW YORK – Miguel Cotto hasn’t fought in Texas since March 2001, but boxing fans there have been receptive to his return. Michael Yormark, Roc Nation’s president and chief of branding and strategy, said Wednesday that 50 percent of the tickets available to the Cotto-James Kirkland fight February 25 in Frisco, Texas, have been sold. That would mean roughly 6,000 tickets have been purchased for the event since going on sale December 22, because The Ford Center at The Star, the Dallas Cowboys’ training facility, can accommodate at least 12,000 fans for boxing.
NEW YORK – Miguel Cotto didn’t fight once in 2016. The four-division champion wants to make up for that inactivity this year. The Puerto Rican icon said Wednesday during a question-and-answer session in Manhattan that he wants his February 25 fight against James Kirkland to be the first of “two, three” fights in 2017, but wouldn’t speculate on potential opponents if he defeats Kirkland in their HBO Pay-Per-View main event in Frisco, Texas.
NEW YORK – Michael Yormark has heard and read all the criticism. Roc Nation’s president and chief of branding and strategy still firmly believes the Miguel Cotto-James Kirkland junior middleweight match, scheduled for February 25 in Frisco, Texas, belongs on pay-per-view. Puerto Rico’s Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) will end a 15-month layoff when he enters the ring to fight Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs), who won’t have fought for 21 months by the time they square off.
According to former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, he was under the impression that a fight with Miguel Cotto would come together, but claims the Puerto Rican star changed the terms when it came to the catch-weight.
On February 25th former four-division champion Miguel Cotto (40-5) will return to the ring for the first time in 15 months when he faces James Kirkland (32-2) in Frisco, Texas. The fight will be distributed by HBO pay-per-view.
On Monday night, Five-Time World Champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) attended the Dallas Cowboys vs. Detroit Lions game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. Prior to kickoff, Cotto hit the field to present fellow Roc Nation Sports’ family Dez Bryant with signed boxing gloves.
On February 25th, 36-year-old Miguel Cotto is coming back from a 14-month layoff to face a dangerous puncher in James Kirkland. Cotto has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez last November. Cotto admits that 2017 might be his final year in the sport.
